I applaud the news that Sesame Street will add Julia, a character with Autism Spectrum Disorder. As the number of children diagnosed grows each year, it is important for children to understand the challenges that children with autism face, as well as learn to appreciate the unique perspectives these children can provide. This is one more step in making sure we embrace these children and give them every opportunity to learn, grow and succeed. Children who grow up watching Julia will, in my opinion, be less likely to judge or to see children with this diagnosis as "weird" or somehow damaged.
